Doin' it like a dude...F O R W H A T ?

This week I have been reflecting on things and I have come to the realisation that I truly do not understand the male species. There’s no amount of self-help books, conversations with guy’s and observation that can help me understand them, and so I admit defeat... I give up.
Now please don’t mistaken this blog entry as me ‘male bashing’, I just want to ask a few questions in hopes that I may get some answers or insight as to what’s really going on. If it does sound like I’m male bashing then forgive me in advance because... I’m going in!
Soooo, like what’s up with guys wanting to be chased/pursued now? ...eh? They want the girl to make the first move, to control the situation, initiate conversation?  (Ok I understand this may not apply to you but this may apply to your boy mhm ...So what’s this all about?) Is this down to lack of interest or just plain laziness? I don’t understand, I mean have you ever seen a gazelle chase after the lion? Is it that men don’t want to work for the female their admiring after? Or are they allowing the woman to take control because it’s a new era, 2011...woop woop! Can all the independent women stand up!...sit yo ass down this is all, your fault.
See I don’t know about you lady, but I like being chased after, I like for the guy to make the necessary steps to pursue me, it lets me know how much he’s interested and it makes me feel pretty, hey! call me old fashioned. You’re a liar if you say you hated it when a guy would approach you, tell you that he found you attractive and proceeded to ask for your number. That makes you feel good right? Exactly!! So will I ever become the chaser?...heck nah! Ok that’s a bit brash, maybe if there was some kind of balance.
But let me just say this guy’s (yes back to you...ahem I mean your boy) When you give her a little too much control it may not always work in your favour, by taking the back seat and allowing her to do all the ‘chasing’ knowing that you’re feeling her just as much as she is you, she will immediately assume that you’re not interested and keep it moving. I mean its things like this that has us singing about “doin it like a dude” and “like a boy”, c’mon son! A woman likes for a man to take the lead, it’s your nature & our turn on.
Plus those trousers do nothing for my figure so I’d rather you wear them.

"There are no good men out there..."
- T H E S I N G L E W O M A N

Oh shut up! Honestly it's just a broken record, if I had a pound for the amount of times I've heard this statement I'd be a billionaire. When are women going to take responsibility for their own ish, ever thought maybe the issue isn't so much the calibre of men out there but more so your choices? Or maybe just maybe you don't have the capability to keep a good man...with your ungrateful arse... Harsh?
Sorry it has to be said. As women we find ourselves making checklists titled “My ideal man"; what we expect from him, how he should look, what he should and shouldn’t have blah blah blah. When in hindsight we should create a checklist for ourselves titled "What I need to do to be the ideal woman" (that's a long title innit...) But noooo here we are with a list of 'ideals' singing along to Beyonce’s single ladies in public but depressingly living our love life through slow jamz behind closed doors...hmm?

The fact of the matter is there comes a time where you have to take control of your own destiny, yes I understand that in the past you were hurt by every guy you’ve been with, but have you ever considered that YOU may be the problem and not him. Take time to re-evaluate yourself and your choices. Instead of going on about what you need in a man think about what you have to offer. Instead of going on about what YOU WANT in a relationship, think about what you NEED...makes sense?..no?...read it again.
The time spent flapping your left hand about dancing to Beyonce (who by the way HAS A MAN), complaining, male bashing, kissing your teeth rolling your eyes... oh look! What’s that?...the man of your dreams just walked past, oh right yeah you was too busy entertaining your BS to notice.

[ Jersey Mini Skirt ]

Today's LOOKBOOK is based around my wardrobe fav; the Jersey Mini skirt. I absolutely LOVE it!
I have them in black, grey, graphic print, stripes, floral you name it! The reason why I love this piece so much is because it’s versatile & comfortable as all heck.
You can wear it casual with a graphic tee, over sized top or plain cami with flats, boots or even plimsolls. As well as dress it up by throwing on some heels, a tailored blazer and a nice top. Matter fact I’ve even gotten away with wearing it to the club with a form fitting top and no tights to pass it off as a sexy dress.

Regardless of how you wear it this skirt goes with ANYTHING!
Most definitely a MUST HAVE for any wardrobe, whatever your size/shape or style, you really can’t go wrong with a jersey mini skirt, it’s as accessible as your favourite pair of leggings.

I ❤ it!
I paired my black skirt (H&M) |  with a graphic vest (H&M) |  black cami (Primark) |  black longline cardi (TopShop) | Black tights (Primark)

Accessorized it! Owl necklace (Forever21) | Camera necklace (Forever21) | Bow Ring (Charlotte Russe)

For Colored Girls...not for me [R E V I E W]

So a few days ago I decided to watch Tyler Perry’s new movie “For Colored Girls”, I had been excited to watch it for a while, I’ve heard mixed reviews about it so I wanted to see for myself.

A little brief synopsis of the movie:  For coloured girls is a movie that takes you on a journey through the lives of 8 black women all being represented by a specific colour. The women go through some hard hitting stuff; I don’t want to say too much just in case you haven’t seen it.

In knowing that this movie was based on a 1975 theatrical piece by Ntozake Shange called 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf' (an acclaimed work of prose poetry that examined what it means to be a black woman), my excitement turned to anxiety, I was anxious to see how Tyler’s portrayal of this play would transcend cinematically.
Sad to say I was quite disappointed but yet not too surprised, Tyler Perry managed to over dramatize a beautiful piece by making it “his own” and doing what he does best, turn the whole thing into a huge soap opera with melodrama’s and obvious black cliché’s.  If I could say anything positive about the film it was that he managed to just about capture the essence of the original poetry by incorporating it within the dialogue, for it to sound like highly theatrical and evocative poetry rather than just....dialogue.

Personally I didn’t feel “empowered” by the movie, and what I actually took away from it (and what I tend to gain from most of Tyler Perry films) is that I should steer clear from all men, they’re dangerous, troublesome and bad for me. When in hindsight the moral of the play was the idea that to love a man, especially sexually, means giving up part of yourself, relinquishing some of your power. Also that to be a woman is difficult enough without having to contend with other women scrutinizing you, and as women we should be able to look out for each other. In my humble opinion For Colored Girls is basically Waiting To Exhale pissed on by Tyler Perry...harsh?

All in all I’d give the film 5/10, solely on dramatic purposes and the fact that he used an amazing cast of great black actresses, who in my opinion were the glue that held the train wreck together. The whole movie lacked class, substance, and raw emotion. A CHEAP portrayal of the original play.

"Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint." - Isaiah 40:28-31

Fashion Finds: Make a S T A T E M E N T [Cocktail Ring Edition]

I live by this motto. For those that know me, know that I LOVE wearing black and sometimes that could get a little boring, so I try to jazz things up a bit by adding statement pieces.
You can make a statement with your jewellery, shoes, bags & other accessories (scarfs, hats, etc) you kinda know where I'm going with this right? So this season I plan to go through what I use to make a statement.

One major trend are cocktail rings, which can make a great statement piece (if done right), matter fact a cocktail ring can be the only piece of jewellery you wear with your outfit, but again that depends on the ring itself and how much of a S T A T E M E N T it makes.

Here are some of my personal Favs:

This past year I've had this thing for OWL Jewellery, it all started when I bought this gawjus owl necklace from H&M last summer. It turned into a slight obsession...ok maybe thats a bit drastic but I am pretty fond of them. This has been an obvious autumn trend and is still going strong, with Forever 21, Charlotte Russe & of course H&M having beautiful OWL pieces for reasonable prices.

For my Londoners who love these beauties take a trip down Spitafields market in East London. ♥
